The pursuit of excellence in English is an attitude not merely a goal.

In this course, advanced-level students will be given the opportunity to practise and improve their English language skills in an academic context and to direct their own learning. Emphasis will be placed on expanding students’ powers of expression so that their English is not only fluent, accurate and natural sounding, but also employs complex structures typical of academic and professional discourse among native speakers of English. Advanced-level grammatical structures will be introduced, but priority will be given to expanding vocabulary, idioms and collocations.

Through the use of authentic audio and written materials drawn from a variety of sources, students will engage with topics from diverse disciplines. An avid interest in attaining proficiency—an ever-elusive goal—is a pre-requisite for this course, as is the desire and willingness to participate actively in and occasionally moderate discussions.
