Academic English for Master Students

If you have been admitted to an English-language Master's program, then this is the right course for you! The course is designed for international students who already have a good command of English and now wish to excel in an English-speaking academic environment. The course provides training in the English language combined with a variety of academic skills such as oral presentation, academic writing, reading, research and seminar skills. Students will engage in a variety of interactive activities, discussions and assignments tailored to foster critical thinking, effective communication and academic success. The course is aligned with levels B2 ´Independent User – Vantage´ and C1 or ´Proficient User – Advanced´ of the CEFR or GeRS.

Key Features

  • Interactive reading sessions with practice of reading strategies.
  • Authentic content from academia, including extracts from lectures, student presentations, and seminar discussions. 
  • Extracting key information from journals and using this in writing
  • Activity-based learning to enable students to apply language skills in practical scenarios.

 

At the end of this course, you will have:

  • enhanced and practiced academic skills, such as, summarizing and paraphrasing, citation and referencing, and avoiding plagiarism
  • listened to general and complex texts and improved note-taking skills
  • peer-reviewed work
  • enhanced skills for presentation and discussion
  • developed knowledge of more advanced grammatical, phonetic and lexical structures of the English language.

Note that there are different options with regards to language levels and grading.

  1. The basic workshop is not formally assessed. Students will receive a participation certificate for B2 level including 3 ECTS-Credits and 2 SWS at the end of the course, provided that they have fulfilled the attendance requirements of the course.

 

  1. Students with C1 English language proficiency have the option to take a language level test on the first day of the course, in order to receive a C1 certificate at the end of the course.

 

  1. Both B2 and C1 students interested in acquiring a graded certificate of achievement (necessary for some modules) are required to complete a graded assessment at the end of the course.

    The study material will be provided by the instructor.
